The unfortunately named Pokemon Go Plus + is a new accessory designed to enhance both Pokemon Go and the new sleep tracking game, Pokemon Sleep. Like its predecessor, the Pokemon Go Plus, the Poke Ball-shaped Plus + allows you to passively catch Pokemon in Pokemon Go without the burden of having to actually play the game. Its autocatch feature will automatically throw normal Poke Balls at wild Pokemon, even if your phone is in your pocket. It’s basically like trading your fishing rod in for a tugboat with a big net behind it that scoops up every creature that crosses your path. Remember when Pokemon were friends you would form a lifelong bond with? We let machines mass-catch them for us now. What did they do to us?

New to the Plus + is the ability to toss Great Balls and Ultra Balls as well. Efficiency! Unfortunately, you won’t be able to automatically throw anything better than a regular Poke Ball. If you want to toss Great Balls and Ultra Balls at your prey, you’ll have to wait until you see a light and feel a vibration on the Plus +, then press the button in the middle. It’s not exactly labor intensive (not that tossing Poke Balls manually is labor intensive either) but it does mean you have to actually engage with the device and react to the vibration.

Of course, you might not want to use that feature all the time. If you just want to use the autocatch feature and ignore the opportunity to throw better balls, you might also want to turn off the vibration by putting the Plus + on silent mode. Well, sucks for you, the Plus + doesn’t have a silent mode. If it’s on, it’s vibrating, and the only way to make it stop is to take it apart and damage the internals of the device.

The Plus + actually does feature a silent mode, but it’s only enabled when it's in sleep tracking mode. You can earn bonuses in Pokemon Go now based on how long you sleep each night - and the research assignment for the new sleepy Snorlax requires seven nights of sleep tracking - and it can also be used to track your sleep in Pokemon Sleep by resting it on your bed at night instead of your phone. But, during the day, if you just want a break from the vibration, you’re out of luck.

Over on Reddit, u/ProfundaMaro shared some pictures of the inside of the Plus + so that other modders could take a look at it and see what it takes to disable the vibration. Apparently the old Plus had this issue as well, and Go players were hoping the Plus + would fix it, but no such luck. If you want to disable the vibration, according to Reddit, you have to remove the vibration motor, or at the very least cut the wires connecting it to the battery. The only way to fix this would be to solder the battery back in. Some claim doing this improves battery life, so at least there’s that.

I joke, but I don’t begrudge anyone for using the Pokemon Go Plus +. It’s a cute device and it can help a lot with the grind if you’re angling for Level 50, a goal I’ve spent the last 6 years inching towards day by day. I’d use this thing while walking around Disneyland with my family, who, as I’ve learned from experience, don’t particularly enjoy spending a whole day with me at the happiest place on Earth with my face glued to my phone. It’s a nice tool, but the fact that you can’t turn off the vibration without destroying it is a no-go for me, especially when the off-brand options have somehow managed to figure out how to include a silent mode right out of the box. Maybe by the time the Plus + [+] comes along (now with Pokemon Poop functionality) comes along, they’ll be able to figure this one out.
