After revealing that Baldur's Gate 3 is coming to PS5 as well as PC, Larian Studios has now clarified that the game is not, in fact, a PS5 console exclusive. An Xbox port is in the works, but the devs are not ready to reveal it yet.
According to the developers, the current build of Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox is running into co-op issues on Series X and S. The studio says that making sure the performance is good across both systems is a requirement to ship the game, and therefore, it is not ready to officially unveil the port as it has with PlayStation fans.
"We have no exclusivity for which platforms we can bring BG3 to, or when, and will announce support for additional platforms if and when we’re ready," says Larian, in a statement provided to TheGamer. "We’ve had an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 in development for some time now. We’ve run into some technical issues in developing the Xbox port that have stopped us feeling 100% confident in announcing it until we’re certain we’ve found the right solutions."
The statement goes on to shed some light on what these issues entail. "We’ve been unable to get splitscreen co-op to work to the same standard on both Xbox Series X and S, which is a requirement for us to ship."
Larian once again clarifies that Sony hasn't bought itself any timed console exclusivity, and the only thing preventing the studio from announcing the Xbox port is these technical issues. There's no indication of when these will be addressed, so it's possible the Xbox version will have to give the launch day of August 31 a miss. If it does so, however, it won't be because of any PS5-privilege.
This isn't too surprising, given how the PS5 doesn't have a weaker counterpart to worry about. While the Series S is an impressive bit of kit, it seems that it still requires a bit more work than the beefier Series X. And with this in mind, much like we predicted this morning, it's safe to rule a Switch port out. Sorry, Nintendo fans.
