Sonic Superstars is giving us classic 2D platforming with a twist, in the form of the new Chaos Emerald abilities. Whether it's slowing down time or sending a bunch of duplicates to go and take some hits for you, there are now a bunch of new ways to approach stages and boss battles. Well, there are exactly seven ways to mix things up, because there's one for each Chaos Emerald - something that created a problem during development.

Sonic Superstars looks like a love letter to the classic 2D games in the series, reimagined with 3D character models. Much like these older games it will have local multiplayer, something that most modern titles skip altogether. However, as much as this is appreciated, it seems that this feature won't go much further than that, as Superstars won't launch with online multiplayer.

Out of all of Sonic the Hedgehog's ccute, colorful sidekicks, there aren't many as widely popular as Shadow. The blue blur's evil counterpoint turned ally has been a popular pick for best character among the Sonic community upon his introduction to the series in Sonic Adventure 2, though you wouldn't really think so considering how often he's left on the sidelines. For example, Shadow didn't feature in Sonic Frontiers, and it was revealed by Sonic Team's Yakashi Iizuka that he won't be appear in Sonic Superstars either.

It is always wise to be skeptical of a new Sonic game. Over the last 30 years the Sonic series has been batting about 100, and that’s if you’re being extremely generous. 2017’s Sonic Mania proved that there’s still creative space left to explore in the world of 2D Sonic games, and that fans still have an appetite for classic Sonic. Now, Balan Wonderworld studio Arzest is hoping to recapture the golden era of Sonic in the upcoming co-op-focused Sonic Superstars. Writing that sentence gave me acid reflux, but luckily, actually playing the game didn’t.

Yesterday, the annual Summer Game Fest showcase was held in Los Angeles to a live audience for the first time.
