Baldur's Game 3 is a game about wondrous lands, fantastical creatures, and... dice. Like, a lot of dice. These dice rolls play a huge role in the game, shaping the narrative by determining the outcome of all your actions, conversations, and encounters.
Learning the mechanics that influence these dice rolls is crucial to mastering the game. Among these are ability modifiers, advantages and disadvantages, and inspiration. Learning how to use inspiration can arm you with a powerful tool to weave even the worst luck into a heroic tale—so let's get into it.
What Is Inspiration?
Similarly to its namesake from Dungeons & Dragons, Inspiration is a resource that lets you reroll one single dice roll.
Unlike its namesake, however, Inspiration in Baldur's Gate 3 can only be used on Ability Checks. Essentially, it gives you the equivalent of advantage on one Ability Check, which you can choose to use at any time.
Inspiration should not be confused with the Bard class features, Bardic Inspiration or Combat Inspiration.
You can have up to four charges of inspiration at once, after which you do not receive any more—so make sure not to hoard them, and remember to use them at the right moments.
Lastly, remember that Inspiration gives you another chance, not a guaranteed success. You'll be able to roll as many times as you have Inspiration charges, but if you fail all four rerolls, then it might be time to accept your fate and start rolling with the punches.
How Do You Use Inspiration?
Every so often, despite our best efforts at remembering information, lying to goblins, or petting that perfectly non-suspicious sheep in a swamp, we fail. That's just the nature of the dice. Still, sometimes a roll comes around that we don't want to fail. That's where Inspiration comes in.
As long as you have at least one charge of inspiration, the game will prompt you to reroll failed rolls at the Failure screen.
All you have to do is click that "Roll Again" button, and you'll get another shot at changing fate.
That said, remember that Inspiration is generally not too easy to come by, so make sure not to squander it all on something silly.
Unfortunately, Inspiration can only be used during Ability Checks that bring up the dice-rolling UI. This means it cannot be used for passive checks such as Perception, Arcana, or Religion checks when your character is walking around.
How Do You Get Inspiration?
Inspiration is gained when an event occurs during your travels that align with a party character's background. Think of them as personal achievements for each character, depending on their personality traits, bonds, and ideals.
Some examples of this include:
Event | Description | Aligns With |
---|---|---|
Strategist | Destroy a powerful foe in one strike. | Soldier |
Soul For Sale | Acquire a Soul Coin for your personal collection. | Noble |
The Phases Unfold | Solve the moon puzzle sealing the door to the Underdark. | Sage |
Born Innocent | Save the owlbear cub from the goblins. | Urchin |
Mirror Master | Trick the magic mirror in the Thayan cellar | Charlatan |
