Henry Cavill will finally say goodbye to Geralt of Rivia over the next two months as the third season of The Witcher rolls out. Fans are upset to see him go, and Cavill still hasn't said why he's leaving, but in a new promotional video, he sang the praises of his co-stars and everything they've brought to the show and their characters.
"I suppose we should talk to Henry?" Jaskier actor Joey Batey said, asking Cavill about his experience filming his last season (thanks, PC Gamer).
"I actually just want to talk about my co-stars here," Cavill answered. "Once again it was such a pleasure and an honour to be working with you guys. You guys bring so much nuance and detail to these characters, which are often at risk of being oversimplified, and what you guys have done with the characters has involved work, care, and effort. And believe me, working with you guys was the biggest pleasure. So, [I] just want to say I'm gonna miss you. I'm gonna miss you very much."
Cavill revealed that he was leaving The Witcher last year. It was a sudden and shocking announcement that nobody had predicted, especially since he had previously said that, as a fan of the games and books, playing Geralt was "an extraordinary opportunity to live my childhood and adult life fantasies".
Speculation after the announcement ran rampant. One popular theory claimed he was hanging up the silver and steel swords for a DCEU return in the wake of his Black Adam cameo. He also appeared in The Flash, and there was even a cut ending featuring him and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman. However, James Gunn is rebooting the DCEU under a new name, the DCU, with a younger Superman.
Many believe that Cavill left The Witcher for the DCEU and ended up losing both roles, but this is purely speculative and there could be plenty of other reasons for his departure. Some fans believe it was over creative differences as the show continues to make changes from the source material. Until Cavill himself says, we don't know.
In response to Cavill's praise of his co-stars, Batey responded by thanking him "for your incredible contribution to The Witcher across three seasons [...] We are gonna miss you and we love you."
The Witcher's third season is being split into two parts, the first of which debuts on June 29 in only ten days. The second part comes on July 27. When it all wraps up, Cavill will be done with the role of Geralt, making room for Liam Hemsworth's take. The show has even been renewed for a fifth season, so we have at least two seasons of Hemsworth to look forward to.
